What is OFSI and why does it matter?
OFSI is the UK government body that enforces financial sanctions. There's a consolidated list of individuals that UK businesses are legally prohibited from dealing with financially. Receiving or sending rent payments involving a sanctioned person is a criminal offence — and ignorance is no defence.
The penalties? Up to £1 million in fines, criminal prosecution, and potential director disqualification. There has already been a case where a company was fined specifically for checking at the start of a tenancy and missing a sanctions listing that came later. A one-off check is not enough.
